What Is the Tajikistan Tourist Visa?
The Tajikistan tourist visa is an official travel authorization that allows foreign nationals to enter Tajikistan for leisure and sightseeing purposes. Tajikistan offers three main pathways for tourists:
- Visa-free entry for 60+ countries (up to 30 days)
- eVisa (electronic visa) for 121 eligible nationalities
- Visa on arrival at Dushanbe International Airport for 71 countries
Most Western travelers – including citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia, and the European Union – can enter visa-free for up to 30 days. For longer stays or for nationalities not on the visa-free list, the eVisa is the most convenient option.
Visa-Free Entry to Tajikistan
Tajikistan introduced a generous visa-free policy that covers citizens of over 60 countries. The maximum stay depends on your nationality and ranges from 30 days to unlimited.
Unlimited Stay Countries
Nationals of six former Soviet states can stay in Tajikistan indefinitely without a visa:

90-Day Stay Countries
Three countries have a 90-day visa-free arrangement:

- The United Kingdom is NOT on the visa-free list – UK citizens need an eVisa
- If you plan to visit the GBAO region (Pamir Highway), you still need a separate GBAO permit
- Stays exceeding 10 working days (14 calendar days) require OVIR registration
- Visa-free entry does not allow you to extend your stay beyond 30 days

Tajikistan eVisa for Tourists
If your country is not on the visa-free list, or if you want to stay longer than 30 days, the eVisa is your best option. Citizens of 121 countries can apply online through the official portal at evisa.tj.
The eVisa is a single-entry or double-entry visa that allows tourism, short business visits, and transit through Tajikistan.

How the validity works: Your eVisa is valid for a 90-day window starting from the entry date you specify in your application. Within that window, you can stay for up to 60 consecutive days. You do not have to enter on the exact date you specified – you can arrive any day within the 90-day validity period.
How to Apply for the Tourist eVisa
Applying for a Tajikistan eVisa is a straightforward online process:
- Visit the official portal at evisa.tj – do not confuse it with visa.gov.tj, which is a different system for embassy visa applications
- Fill out the application form with your personal information, passport details, and planned entry date
- Upload a passport scan – your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
- Upload a passport-style photo (35x45mm, white background)
- Pay the fee online using a Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card
- Receive your approved eVisa by email – print a copy to carry with you

Processing Time
The official processing time is 2-5 business days, but many applicants receive approval within 24-48 hours. However, delays are common and unpredictable. Some applications take weeks, and rejections do happen.

Visa on Arrival at Dushanbe Airport

Important: While the visa on arrival has historically been reliable, reports from 2025 indicate that some travelers (particularly UK citizens) have been refused and turned away. GBAO Permit for the Pamir Mountains
If you plan to visit the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) – home to the legendary Pamir Highway, the Wakhan Corridor, and some of the most remote mountain scenery on Earth – you need a separate GBAO permit in addition to your visa.
How to get a GBAO permit:
- With your eVisa: Select the GBAO permit option during your eVisa application on evisa.tj. Cost: $20 USD. The permit is added to your eVisa.
- In Tajikistan (for visa-free travelers): Apply at OVIR offices in Dushanbe or Khujand. Processing takes 1-3 business days.
- Through a travel agent: Many Tajik travel agencies can arrange the permit in advance.
The GBAO permit is valid for the same duration as your visa. Note that GBAO permits are NOT available at the airport visa on arrival booth.
OVIR Registration Requirements
If you are staying in Tajikistan for more than 10 working days (14 calendar days including weekends and holidays), you must register with the OVIR (Office of Visas and Registration).

- Where to register: OVIR offices in Dushanbe, Khujand, Khorog, and other major cities

Note: Hotels and guesthouses do not automatically register guests. If you are staying in private accommodation or camping, you must register yourself.
Failure to register within the required timeframe can result in fines of $100-$500 and complications when leaving the country.
Extending Your Tourist Visa
If 60 days is not enough (eVisa) or 30 days (visa-free), you may be able to extend your stay.
eVisa extensions:
- eVisas cannot typically be extended beyond 60 days
- To stay longer, you would need to leave Tajikistan and apply for a new eVisa
Visa-free extensions:
- Visa-free stays of 30 days cannot be extended
- For longer stays, apply for an eVisa before your trip or at a Tajik embassy

Overstay Penalties
Overstaying your visa in Tajikistan is taken seriously. Penalties include:
